Sumbawa Island is located at the eastern part of
Lombok Island and consist of five regencies : West
Sumbawa, Sumbawa, Dompu, Bima and Bima City
(Municipality).
Sumbawa Island offer some wonderful natural forest,
archeological site, agriculture scenery, and a
coastline of numerous pristine beach, waters surfing
adventure fishing, sailing and under sea wonder
explore.
There are a wide range of accommodation in Sumbawa
Island, with most popular 5 stars rated hotel on
Moyo Island – Aman Wana, Tropical Beach Club at
Sekongkang West Sumbawa. Others comfortable one can
be found at Sumbawa Besar such as Kencana Beach
Hotel, Laguna Biru. The surfing adventure trip can
be done at Hu’u Beach or the most famous waves in
Indonesia.
Bima city at the eastern part of Sumbawa Island, a
connection point to Komodo Island through out Sape
Harbor. There are some boat stand by here for
charter to Komodo and Rinca for the Dragon
exploration and wild animal.
SUMBAWA REGION
Sumbawa Island has extensive forest areas in the
mountainous south – west while at the eastern part
has Jati Trees or Teak plantation, intermittently
laced with nice
forest stretch and monkeys population.
Mount Tambora is a significant feature of Sumbawa
Island. In fact, Mt. Tambora erupted on 1815 was one
of the most dramatic in the world’s history.
Sumbawa’s other active volcano Mt. Sangeang, is
isolated island which erupted last in 1985 forcing
the evacuation of the island’s inhabitant. On a map,
the outline of the island is contorted by capes,
peninsulas and deeply cut bays.
The rich volcanic soil the rivers valleys such as
near Bima, Dompu and Sape, yield rich crop. How ever
the extensive dry land areas found particularly in
Sumbawa Regency provide good amazing land for
cattle, goats and horses. Specious of plants can be
found in the forest are Kesambi, Bungur, Sonokeling,
Mahagony, Teak, Kelicung, Pala, Ipil, bamboo, Tutul
and Etc.
In
Sumbawa Island there are several type of animals
spread out over the area according to climate and
natural conditions. Wild animals can be found in
Sumbawa area are : Monkeys, wild pig, small deer,
deer, iguanas, porcupines, turtles, and many kind of
poisonous snacks. Bird spacious can be found
including : pring, parrots, bering, koak kaok,
punglor, cucak rawa.
The most significant tourism and recreational
activities in Sumbawa Island found in the southern
coastal area : Surfing, followed by surfers from
Australia, America, Japan, Brazil and regular
visitor.
Economic activity since 2000 is dominated by Gold
Mining in West Sumbawa Regency followed by
agriculture, forestry products, cashew nut
plantation, aquaculture activities, fishing and very
small formal industry. Tourism development has
focused on the “BEACH”, but however, echo-tourism
has great potential due to appeal of the area’s
isolation and wilderness.
PEOPLE AND RELIGION
The two ethnic group living in Sumbawa area : SAMAWA
who mainly reside in East Sumbawa and West Sumbawa
district while the MBOJO
who live in BIMA and DOMPU at the eastern part.
These group are mostly Moeslim but differentiation
in their local language, custom and tradition.
Despite the different religion and belief system of
this diverse population, they live side by side in
mutual respect and harmony. In addition, there was
evidence in the past time HINDU presence as well as
the influence of BUGIS people from Makassar –
CELEBES.
There are some villages with Hindu’s cultural
influence in the West Sumbawa or Sumbawa district.
Family temple can be seen from the main road between
Poto Tano, Jereweh and near Utan Rhee. As such,
there some opportunities to see Hindu ceremonies
being conducted there. A village near Tongo, east
of Sekongkang has significant Hindu community as
well.
A
significant new area for vegetable cultivation can
be found at Sekongkang and Aik Kangkung at West
Sumbawa Regency and mostly the people who live here
the immigrant from Lombok and Bali.
